what exploding rockets? I've seen some that couldn't land softly enough, but they all went up just fine and nobody else in history has ever vertically landed an orbital rocket at all.

Yes, but that stuff (crashing/breaking/sinking) implies the technology is new. Relanding rockets have been around since the 80's. Nasa wrote reusable rockets for human cargo off, because its just so expensive and risky to put people on rockets with "recycled" boosters vs just building a new one. Wake me up when spacex is brave enough to put humans on a recycled ship.
Its like watching someone re-invent the wheel and saying "yeah well the first times wheels were invented there were lots of mistakes"- the point is mute, the wheel already exists.
Muck has cut launch costs, and I applaud him for that- but this is not going to lead to sustainable space colonization. Much more likely the lower cost will be used by USG (or China) to push through some sort of military orbital hegemony (the next step up from naval hegemony).
