>>12988853Just to add to this, going from wikipedia's numbers, to get the rocket up to height and through the atmosphere is only about 10-20% of the delta-v required to reach low earth orbit, which just goes to show that a lot more energy is needed to do the sideways burn. The boosters only provide a relatively small amount of this horizontal speed, so when they're dropped, they are super slow compared to reentry speeds.
