Unfortunately we still have a long way to go to make amends for the US's white supremacist past - if it can ever truly be done.
Given all the current systemic and institutional inequities that are still pervasive in our society it is perfectly fair for you to not trust the institutions.
There is no assurance that these kinds of human rights abuses couldn't happen again, we may never reach a point where white supremacy is excised from our institutions, but we are morally obligated to do as much as we can. We need to take every precaution we can so that blacks aren't abused again and ought be constantly asking ourselves if we might by violating any future versions of principles like informed consent, even 30 ex post facto.
I believe if we fight for equality and dedicate ourselves to anti-racism we can perform miracles, like curing latent stage syphilis (but only in black people)
