All it takes is once crazy mofo to get this space colonization business started. You can accomplish things that would seem impossible, with the proper motivation and resources.
You can either stay on earth and be a dilettante, working out the thousands of minutiae and try to make the Mars colony a Disney resort (all the different space suits you could use, microgravity, radiation shielding, power generation, trans inclusion, "we need to solve racial inequality before we got to space" etc. etc.). And you'd get to Mars 500 years from now. Or, you get some brave souls to accept the risks and maybe die laying down the foundations for future colonizers to build on in 50.
