I went to this seminar a while back, it was a bunch of trans people talking in a café about how it's amazing and liberating to have the option. When there was room for questions, I started by saying that I have always viewed the decision to determine their own gender as them practicing their liberty in a manner they see fit, not a symptom of a mental illness but that I have never truly understood why I saw it that way (you know, making grounds where I won't get my limbs torn off) and than I asked them the exact same question OP asked.
They spoke for like 20 minutes and haven't even come close to answering because they are as lost on the issue as I am. We just don't have the data.
To some extent I'm glad that people are free to choose. Maybe some of those kids can live happier lives and at least we will get long term data with which we can make better decisions in the future but I don't want to have anything to do with it.
