there is no reason to think it can't be done

nanobots, as we currently know the universe, would not be able to reduce total entropy. in the distant future, we might be able to figure it out

by all that we know, second law of thermodynamics is correct. all that we know, might not be all there is to know.

there was a time when nobody thought you could slow down clocks by moving them faster etc.

No. Self replicators would aid entropy actually. They would begin absorbing energy and cooling the universe down substantially. What you would need to do is travel upstream from gravitational fields and somehow either pierce the veil of gravity to another universe, find an entangled source of energy in this one that grants us more, or resist the collapse and pop out the other end, or travel backwards completely.

No, even with perfect matter to energy conversion we will eventually run out of matter. In the long run, civilization can survive farming black holes and iron stars, but we can not truly reverse entropy.
