I really meant "non-gravitationaly-connected" stars, but since you mention that idea...

In a binary system, would it actually explode the
other star or would it just "blow it away"?

Not directly, but indirectly: On the scale of whole galaxies, and on stellar evolutionary time-scales, the comparatively numerous supernovas in recently formed star clusters compress interstellar gas to trigger further star-formation in waves that propagate almost like storm fronts of detonation through fuel. The bluish arms of spiral galaxies are in this way not fixed features, but compression waves sustained by the thermonuclear fire of stars at the highest end of the mass and luminosity scale.
