If I'm learning about proof theories in logic then I debate which has more universal application and which has deficits. If I'm learning foundationally I debate the whole way up

simply try to explain it back on an empty whiteboard, or remember certain key principles that will help you derive said science thing

If I can't find someone to debate it on I try to argue about something in politics or whatever and translate what they're doing in the subject.

What's the topic? I just spoke about logic proof theories.
For math I try to build up from an inference rule taken as an axiom of my metaphysics and build up. Math is really open for debate or at least it was from the late 19th to mid 20th.

Debate the points online, with another person learning the same thing, etc.

The more flaws you see in your own debate, the better your understanding will be.

As long as you spot your flaws, its good. However avoid bad faith debates. Those aren't debates, those are waste of time most of the time.
