Why is he considered a "mathematical" physicist?

Is there really anything he does that warrants that description? I see that his PhD was in theoretical physics. Did he at some point stop doing theoretical physics and start doing mathematical physics?

source? i dont see any evidence that he had a math undergrad degree. im only seeing that he was a savant early on and skipped a few grades plus his dad was a physicist. he still never majored in a stem subject undergrad

Thats what all the so called "savants" try to claim. Its a common theme. It was pushed for a few years that Stephan Hawking skipped undergrad and went straight to his PhD program because his professors noticed how smart he was. Einstein had a rumor like that as well. Its just something to make these people seem like only they can understand this stuff like priests as if they were blessed by God.

and yes, only a few people can actually understand this. grind all you want, its coming naturally and faster to someone like Witten. same thing would happen if Witten tried playing basketball. no matter how hard he works hes not going anywhere with it

He literally was an all American in high school. He likely could have at least done well in DI college. Maybe he wouldnt have made it into the NBA, but he was better than most.

I think his dad was a physicist or something, so he might have already have had more of an education in physics than most people who graduate with an undergrad in physics. Otherwise, why was he so confident he could just go straight into grad school for physics if he had basically no experience with it?

Yeah likely connections and Witten's natural raw brain power is what swayed Princeton's graduate program to take him in. Still, it's insane how he could transition from a bachelor's in history to a PhD in physics 5 years later. Even if his father teased him with Physics topics, it still wouldn't compare to getting an actual degree in the topic. I think this is a testament to Witten's godlike intelligence.

I wouldnt make so light of having what essentially would be a private tutor. In college the teacher has to pay attention to a whole which essentially means he pays attention to practically nobody. Having a parent would be like taking an apprenticeship. Who knows though how much his dad taught him though. Couldve been a lot, couldve been not so much.
