That is EXACTLY what i think, actually
Organic life is merely an egg from which artificial life will emerge. Just think about it logically, the organic needs water, food, oxygen, nutrients, specific temperature/pressure to live well, meanwhile the robot will need none of that. They will make us obsolete

We've lived with the effects of 'rampant optimizers' for all of our history, they're implicit to our species (social collectives), and in the past few decades have seen the effects of new-type digital optimizers. At some point some fucked up 'scifi' shit (ie. using anything other than humans as its tools) will happen with these (some optimizer will get its hands on human-circumventing technology, eg. next-gen military drones), but it's still doubtful it will really be any worse than current daily occurrences (all the insane shit humans already do in the name of their 'tribe').

General AI will never happen. We know almost nothing about consciousness, and what we do know violates a mechanistic view of the universe. Whatever consciousness is, I doubt we'll ever have the capacity to fully understand it, let alone replicate it.

The problem with where AI has gone is that the fixed cost of supervised models is too high.

More complex problem (e.g self-driving car) = higher capacity net = training data requirement explosion. All of a sudden you're using 3 years of the whole first world solving recaptchas so you can train you net.

I acknowledge that having self-driving vehicles is an amazing achievement. But AI is largely inaccessible due to the cost associated with deep supervised models.

I think that the answer to the AI question lies in unsupervised learning.
