That's like asking what are the odds that we were all born on Earth and not some other planet. We couldn't have been born anywhere else, so it must be so. You also could not have been born to different parents--you wouldn't be you in that case you would be that other person.

The moon looking like it is(close to, not exactly which is important) the size of the sun happens to favor conditions for life on Earth as it is now. Humans didn't exist for billions of years because of the conditions on Earth didn't allow it and the moon being where it is is a small, but significant part of that.

You can find that out on your own. Google exists.
But what's so odd about it and what's coincidental? You have to use the word coincidence correctly first. There's nothing to compare it to which would make it coincidental.
Is it odd to you or coincidental that hydrogen has 1 proton 1 electron? Hopefully you answer no to that. Is it coincidental that water is abundant on Earth and it "just so happens" that we drink it to survive? Nope. Same deal with the moon.

I thought about using the question "what is the percent likelihood of a randomly selected planet having conditions that allow for total solar eclipses" or something to that effect, but it didn't seem concise or attention grabbing. I don't know exactly how rare it is, but as far as I know it is rare enough for it to seem rather strange that it occurs on the one planet that has life. It seems like an unlikely coincidence; I think it's much more likely that the two rare occurrences are linked somehow. I made this thread with the intention of finding out how they are linked. I have done some Google searching but can't seem to find any sufficient explanations.

Ok based on what? And what's the probability of someone named Ryan who owns a green 1994 Honda who lives in California, is 25 yes old and speaks 2 languages. Probably pretty darn rare but if he does exist, then it doesn't mean that it's by some coincidence or he is a God or that he should go play the lottery every day...that's just the way he finds himself and that's the way it is, there isn't a coincidence or a meaning to it. Same with us. What's the chance of life occurring on a planet in the habitable zone of a kind of small star 14 billion years after the big bang? Pretty fuckin small yet here we are.

Can we agree that life appears rare in the universe? Most planets don't have life on them. Most planets also don't have conditions that allow for total solar eclipses like ours. Why did these both happen on the same planet? What is the relation between these seemingly unrelated things? Surely there is one, otherwise it would have to be just a massive, incomprehensibly unlikely coincidence. I know that coincidences are arbitrary, but you have to admit that this seems unlikely.

I think we agree on most things but you've attributed coincidence to admittedly two unrelated things. What are the exact odds? Nobody will ever know which is why it's uninteresting and unimportant. You've asked the probability of a specific case that can't be calculated which means your real goal is to extrapolate some sort of meaning out of it. I'm telling you not to and giving other examples of things that are also rare but clearly possible that you and I agree don't have some intrinsic meaning.

It doesn't seem the slightest bit bizarre to you? I'm not trying to imply some kind of religious significance - I believe there is likely a tangible relationship between the two. It is an important ability to disregard our pattern-seeking brains' biases, but there is no harm in indulging them every once in a while, especially in matters of answering unexplained questions like how life came to be. They could offer a good lead that we'd have otherwise missed.

We just live at a time that they appear to be the same size. After a couple hundred millions years the moon will have moved far enough from the earth that a total solar ecplise won't be possible.

Our single sun is way bigger than our single moon, but it's just far enough away that it appears almost exactly the same size when viewed from Earth. How do you not understand why that is an interesting coincidence?

it's not, at least not all the time. even when the moon passes directly in front of the sun, it often results in an annular eclipse. a total solar eclipse is fairly rare, hence the media buzz in whatever country it occurs in.

This is the reason I'm so interested in this. The fact that this happens on the one planet that also has life is undeniably suspicious. I think that there's a more reasonable explanation than mere coincidence. I don't know what that might be; I'm hoping someone here might have some ideas. Like perhaps this >>12972849
