I use thin shin-length wool socks, literally any wool will do, and they are perfect in every situation. Walking around a cold apartment, jogging, working, hiking, attending a funeral, they never let me down and don't pick up odors when they are machine washed.
The caveat is that they only last about 2 years before they need replacing.
