In Mexico certain people used to leave pigs in the middle of towns and villages so that they wouldn't have to feed them, that or the pigs escaped. Afterwards they'd sell the meat to unsuspecting people, or just cheap people like my grandpa, who thought that if he cooked it for long enough the worms would die.
Of course, these pigs lived off of garbage and feces.
