Phosphates are easier to acquire en masse on a cellular level than nitrogen compounds, which are in high demand for use in nucleotides and amino acids.
It's basic market forces.

Yes, but it uses more nitrogen than DNA. (usable) nitrogen is scarce from a cell POV, phosphate is not scarce from a cell POV.

Our atmosphere is 80% nitrogen, nitrogen fixation is simple and multiple organisms do it already, phosphorus is VERY scarce in comparison to nitrogen

I'm not suggesting nitrogen is absolutely scarce, I'm saying it's in high demand elsewhere in cellular metabolism to the point that when the cell adds a new function such as genetic data linkages it's easier to use phosphates instead of more nitrogen.

That doesn't consider the competing demand for nitrogen in nucleobases, amino acids and metal complexes. On an absolute level, bioavailable nitrogen is plentiful. But in practical terms, it's all spoken for by existing, competing processes.

The general hypothesis seems to be that PNA might have formed way before RNA and that RNA overtook. Perhaps a higher stability and resistance to enzymes are actually not beneficial if you want rapid change to adapt to a rapidly changing enviroment - especially after the brutal conditions of early earth
