Just send him the code you used to generate it, isn't it simple? Some kind of TeX source or something? I don't know how you make figures in biology/chemistry but there must be some way of proving it.

I'd just ignore it if you didn't get any deduction for it.
If you get in trouble that's another issue. Hopefully this isn't your advisor or something (if it is then you should do something about it, since his opinion of you will have an impact) and you can just not take classes with him in the future.

Yeah he did deduct points unfortunately. I've already send an email but to be honest I'm not sure what I expect. I think about half of the students in this course have withdrawn at this point due to shitty instruction and poor feedback. I think I'll just avoid him in the future, but it's dissapointing. Throughout undergrad up until this point I thought bad teachers were a thing of high school but I guess not.

Well depending on how serious it gets most schools have formal appeals processes and such. Or if you have an advisor you can talk to about it maybe they have ideas I don't know.
I guess I was extremely lucky since most my professors were really great.
I only had one professor that just hated us because he thought he deserved to be teaching at an ivy league school for some reason. Hope he's happy now that he's at Brown, HA.

Don't take it the wrong way, he's probably just dealt with more students who have plagiarised/forgot to reference in the past. You should have stated in the figure description how you made it though to make it clear that its your work.

Maybe he meant not the figure but the concept of the structure? I.e. the structure of the calcium/EDTA complex has been documented in the literature before - kind of rude anyway. Usually I draw shit like that myself, then I search up some reference I can quote (even tho I didn't use that to make the figure).

Impermissible? Not likely. It's permissible and quite common. If you ever act as a TA, you know the vast majority of students that blatantly plagiarize do so on lab reports. Why would the instructor expect a student to generate this type of figure as original content when it's a well known, highly documented, and easily you led from the interwebs? Remember, you're one of literally thousands of students that this professor will likely instruct

1. Student forgot to cite figure
2. Student put in a lot of time to make a chemical figure that they could have found with some searching

The first is much more likely than the second and as a teacher they have impetus to help ensure you are up to snuff with your writing. A month in the lab will save you a week in the library.

Stop being an autist and just tell them you made it.

This. If you re-type an essay manually, you still copied that essay. It's no different with diagrams/pictures.
If you based your diagram off the diagram in a book/paper and just re-made a virtually/literally identical one, you've still copied from that source and need to credit it.

If anyone in that field could draw it from memory no citation is needed I think if you create a diagram of it. The analogy of a copied paper from memory no longer holds because it's essentially a common thing that anyone can come up with.

Almost every drawing like the one in OP is made using programs like ChemDraw. I've seen thousands of chemistry papers and not a single one say "this figure was generated using X". Usually if someone finds that the figure is plagiarised they ask for it to be retracted after the fact. It's an innocent until proven guilty sort of thing. I'm not saying that's the best way, but that's how it is in the space.
