Wish they came up with a different name for nurse practitioners. There's a pretty wide gap between them and RNs, and even wider with LPNs. But they're not really doctors either and it wouldn't be right to use a modification of doctor like Petty Doctor or Associate Doctor.
The problem is that once people get use to having NPs diagnose and prescribe drugs, they'll expect all nurses to be able to do that. Those nurses of course will jump on the opportunity to equate themselves with NPs.
Not sure what other term they should have used but nurse is too strongly associated with a particular role that doesn't cover nearly as much as an NP does.
