Western society has valued beauty over everything; and I'm only speaking of the consequences of that decision.
Consider (see image). All other things being equal, which is more likely to be dating the millionaire? Which is more likely to be the beneficiary of a competition held for their favor?
There are, of course, not enough millionaires to go around; but this same system plays out all the way down the economic (and social) ladder. So a few rungs down you have the beautiful and ugly competing for homecoming queen, or several layers below... for who will get the biggest rock of crack.
The western social cycle, where beauty is multiplied by fame and money will create consequences, whether people notice or not. The consequences are agnostic, of course; a bad consequence happening whether people want it or not.
