Wikipedia says there have been some human settlement sites on Wrangel island but they predate the mammoth extinction and show no signs of metalworking, just stone tools. No signs of mammoth hunting in the island either. Furthermore, the island had no indigenous human populations when it was finally discovered and studied by huwites. Perhaps the island was just a stopping station for the Bering Strait travellers.
