4.2 sigma deviation strengthening the alredy ~3 sigma deviation measured at Brookhaven. Exciting evidence, not quite a discovery, but JPARC will make an independent measurement as well.

That has to be a huge letdown for the experimenters, given how many people are in the collaboration, how long its been

The tension is now reaching levels of certainty which make it extremely unlikely that this is a statistical fluctuation. Based on the amount of data that they showed is left to analyze, we should be seeing a 5+ sigma result within a year or two.

Also, given that there has only been one other measurement and that this analysis was apparently blinded, it was very unclear whether the experimental values were going to match at all.

I can't speak on their behalf but the person I know that's working on this seemed excited.
