The flies are pushing their own mass in air down just in order to hover, which puts force on the bottom of the jar and thus the scale. However, it's not all going straight down, as the turbulent air mixes and exerting some force on the sides and top of the jar as well. I'd say the scale reads somewhere between 1 and 1.5kg, rather than the answers presented in the picture

it says right there the flies weigh 0.5kg. It doesn't say the flies COULD weigh that, or they could be weightless. Just read what it says and do basic arithmetic.

How could the air pushing on the sides of the jar somehow eliminate the weight of the flies? That doesn't make any sense at all to me.

Is not, but air pushing on the sides rather than the bottom lessens the total readout of the scale. Think of it this way: a fan is blowing air into the jar. You could have some kind of laminar flow tube that directs all of the air to the bottom of the jar. Conversely, you could have a shape that directs the air towards the sides of the jar (for example a cone affixed to the end of the fan). Depending on which, the scale will read higher or lower.

In the cone example, some force is transferred to the cone. The cone is affixed to the fan housing, or to a rod that is attached to the fan housing. Neither the fan or rod touches the jar in this example, so has no bearing on total weight. Maybe because the flies are wholly contained in the jar my example is bad, but I can't really visualize how.

that's literally the fucking heart of the problem i realized. WTF. We comforably add together millions of tons of flies. But when we get the result that a bottle of flies is 0.5 we imagine what half a kilo is in our hand and oh no, no way a little insect ways that much, flies fly anyway, why would they weigh anything?

Yeah, I'm a 1.5kg chad. It's just a weird question to ask about the plane. The question is about a (mostly) closed system, and a plane is in air. The short answer to it is yes, slightly, it just gets dissipated over probably miles of land.

Why can't it be more than 1.5kg?

When I jump on a scale, it goes past my body weight because of the added pressure. Why can't the flies exert more than 0.5kg of pressure down (these flies are fucking huge btw)?

Let's say I wanna weigh powder. Like sugar for a cake or something. I would put an empty container on the scale and hit tear. The scale would show zero even with the container on it so I can get an accurate measurement for my recipe.
