Limnology, worth it?

I am biology undergraduate that will graduate in approximately 3 months and I've been wondering what I should do my MSc. in. I've always been interested in limnology and microbiology but it appears that microbiology is overran by medical doctors in my country. I was thinking of specializing in limnology (i.e. study of inland waters). Is this a respectable field? Will I earn money in this field? Any limnologist here to share personal experience?

I know this branch requires a lot of field study and technical knowledge which is what I'm primarily after. I used to be an idealist dude thinking of staying in academia and publishing respectable research but this system has killed every smidge of hope in me, which is why I'm looking for a more technical job that can be used for other sectors.
