You're finding the zeros of a quadradic form. i.e. y^2 -4y-5 = 0. Then sub y = e^x as >>12936556 said, and solve for x.

e^2x - 4e^x - 5 = (e^x - 2)^2 - 9
We want to find the roots of the equation, so we get
(e^x - 2)^2 = 9
<=> e^x - 2 = +-3
e^x = 2 +-3
x = ln(2 +- 3)
x = ln5

to op: notice how there are 3 powers of e^x, e^2x, ^1x, e^0x, so you can just plug in another variable to e^x and solve for that, then subsitute back
