If I were to hypothesize the cause of serial killers I'd first question whether we are suffering from availability bias due to over reporting, our media loves fear and sensationalism. If the numbers are accurate, then it may be due to individualism and atomization leading to a loss of trust in the collective, resulting in serial killer pathology in the extreme.
