so variation in offspring is limited to mutation

Mutation rate would have to be high for this to produce phenotypes that are different enough for the parent which would also mean that any desirable characteristics can easily be lost in 1 generation through mutation.

DNA is alive, it is immortal and it experiments on itself using various blobs of carbon ring molecules to see what results occur from pattern changes in the DNA, you are one of those blobs of molecules, when the DNA is done with it's experiment it will cast you aside and recycle your carbon rings into some other DNA experiment.
the "living creatures" that you imagine, are just a form a crystal growth, they're fractals which result from expanding the DNA patten. they're no different than an icicle or glittery pyrite except with respect to durability.
