School is a system which demands absolute compliance and obedience. Some people, by virtue of their psychological nature, are drawn to being subjugated and following authority figures. Those people will often perform especially well in a factory-setting school which is how schools have been organized since the 19th century. They will eagerly follow the instructions and try to meet the quota as much as possible. The same people, having pleased their authority figures, usually get good grades in exchange for their obedience although this also depends on other things. This cycle will go on and on. By graduate school, most of the people left are those who perform especially well under a system with a clear authority structure and quotas. By then, they will not only have years of experience living with and following an what is ultimately an authoritarian system, but they will also have started internalizing it.

Ultimately, narcissistic know-it-alls are drawn to the sciences because they perform especially well in an authoritarian quota system, equate economic and academic success with overall life success and deliberately choose an environment where they can advance their own interests while simultaneously avoiding any kind of conflicts with the system. This is self-advancement while maintaining the status quo.

I'd view this as an accurate summation. Most western education is based on authority and rites of passage and science is based on the individual's discipline and reliability of their specific language and pre-defined position in a structured hierarchy.

Would be nice if they moved to more collective goal orientation rather than this one-above-all approach.

Any decent scientist is the opposite of what you describe. They are self-taught, don't follow the orders of authority and instead choose to explore the world to understand it for themselves.
If it were how you described, then science would be dominated by women.

I honestly don't see how your statement could be true. You can find narcissists everywhere. Humanities, the military, art, and specially business and communications, among other things. I don't see narcissistic people being particularly drawn towards science, and I think they just happen to stand out due to how insufferable they are.

Some are. Although those who have the knowledge to back up their narcissism, while very intelligent, are sorely lacking in basic humanity. After a certain point there are only diminishing returns for being narcissistic.

I disagree, maybe in the past that would be true, but today, "scientists" are all glorified data scientists, and really only need to stay within the lines and make safe claims on things the people who fund their "research" support. Creative types are drawn to more adventurous areas, such as business or the arts. Modern science is stale, sterile, predictable, and lacking any mystery. This is why women numbers are increasing in science and are much higher than they were before in the past, going against your claim.

Mate, you literally have to sit still for hours on end and perform the same repetitive studying over and over until you got it.

Ofc if you are IQ 120+ you barely have to study anything and just get it, but over 70% of students and graduates in stem subjects don't have that high of IQs and that means complete obedience and authority acceptance to pass exams which require you to become a scientist.

Why do you think even in hard science subjects a woman graduates more likely than a man, despite statistics shown that women, when it comes to extremes are less smart than a man who goes to uni, yet the man is more likely to fail exams or drop out.
