>>12924534Oh, and speaking of H1B visa people being brought in to keep our system running, I have a story...
I've got an immigrant friend, met her in my masters program. She's from a persecuted ethnic minority group, child of refugees who grew up in a host country in south asia, etc.
So after her masters, she's thinking she wants to go back and try to improve education for her people, right? And I'm all supportive, great idea, advance science to the four corners of the globe, right? So I encourage her to get a doctorate in science education, with a focus on something like 'cultural relevancy' in the classroom. I'm like yeah, this is exactly the right focus for you, these kids back in the old country are gonna get so STEMed.
>years later...She spent the entire time studying how to get black people to pay more attention in American high schools. They count it as a success if a highly educated Ph. D can statistically measure a slight increase in math usage during a lesson about calorie counting a McDonald's meal. And the stats they use in the education field are mostly p-hacking anyway...
I feel pretty bad about encouraging that one.
