Pic unrelated.

Hoping EEs in here can help me out.
I built a heating pad using an arduino.
It uses 5V and 2amps through a SSR to regulate the power to the heating element.

I want to ensure it is safe.
Is there a checklist or something to prevent possible safety hazards?
My electronics knowledge is lacking so I can get things working but I may have some blindsplots.

Any help would be appreciated.

At these voltages there aren't many safety hazards to worry about. You'd win a Darwin award if you figured out how to electrocute yourself with 5v DC.

Your biggest danger comes from fire-hazards. Find datasheets for all your components and make sure they are all operating well within their power ratings. Component failure can start fires quick.

You could probs implement a thermister, to act as a thermal cutout. If Temeprature reaches an unsatisfactory level, then do whatever. It would be fully controllable with an arduino as well.

Bonus points if you figure out an interrupt routine rather than polling.

this is good advice if you are actually planning on using this thing OP. And I would think you would want to know the temperate of the pad either way.

OP, if you're reading this, a system redundancy is always a splendid idea. Also, in industry interrupts are far commonplace than polling (albeit rather more complex).

It's a more complex, and costly solution, but its gonna be more practical, and maybe something better to talk about (idk if you're just a hobbyist or not).

My primary concern was electrically (shock, etc.) related.

I will certainly impliment a temperature related failsafe, and add redundancies where possible.
Although 5V and 2A (2A max as specified by the power supply) I dont expect overheating to be a major concern.

I may have to pass on the bonus points since polling has worked in the past and im not sure the added complexity is worth it.

Nah, you should look into ISRs. It's a more efficient system and an industry standard.

Polling is essentially you asking the sensor "is it too hot" thousands of times in a row. An interrupt is more the sensor will declare when it it's too hot.

If you want to make a battery powered project, ISRs will drastically improve battery life.
