They spend 3 years doing useless memorization and then if they want to do anything more than be a lab monkey they have to learn quantum mechanics (which for them is really hard since they don't have a mathematical background). What you end up with are either lab monkeys or physicists which also know a few chemical reactions.
(I have not considered chemical engineers here, because they're Chads)
