Stupid terminology for algebra, because American education calls something else "algebra" (and has the gall to call an unrelated course "algebra 2") and so Americans have to be reeducated on what algebra actually is by distinguishing it as "abstract".

it's about spotting universal relations between objects following certain axioms.
we all know that regardless of what numbers we choose
$x+y = y+x$ therefore $x+y +z= y+x +z = y+z +x=...$
abstract algebra is all about finding results which don't care whether you are dealing with matrices, numbers, function, etc
