You're harvesting the potential energy left over from when the earth was formed. If all the rocks that gravitationally attracted each other to form the earth ended up with the lowest gravitational potential energy possible they would collect into a single point, but because of electromagnetic repulsion between their atoms they don't overlap each other and end up in a ball instead of a sphere. When you take a rock and toss it into your hole you're just helping it continue on its path towards having the lowest potential energy. Eventually minuscule amounts of air friction will slow it down and it'll just float in the middle of your hole.
