cicada’s tactic is really bizarre. they attract people who solve all these puzzles and the reward is “you can do work for us for free now”. and the winners don’t even know who they would be working for!
i am sure there is someone or some organization behind cicada 3301 but the way they have set the precedent makes any future cryptography challenges very unattractive to anyone. even if the navy did it again i am sure cicada made the marketplace quite barren since it very well could be a huge waste of time
