QUANTUM PHYSICS Double-slit experiment "consciousness" question

Many laypeople characterize the double-slit experiment as "the particles know they're being observed," but I ask is there a single version of this experiment that doesn't involve observation equipment interfering with the waves? I know there have been alternate versions of the experiment that aim to reduce equipment interference by splitting the photons, but I'm not aware if "not measuring" the photon meant they didn't check the results or if the equipment was moved out of the way so it couldn't affect the waves.
