Any geological / mining engineers here? What technological breakthroughs are needed to enable deep drilling into hot granite?
I was listening to an investing podcast with Robert Friedland, a mining billionaire, and he was talking about how this form of geothermal could be a source of near infinite clean energy since it could be done anywhere. One of his companies is trying to develop semi-autonomous directional drilling machines that can bore through hot rock to create the heat exchange reservoirs for geothermal. Is it a matter of better alloys to shield the electronics from the heat? Or are there other factors that make the process too expensive to be worth it?
