I don't know, but I imagine that efficient pathfinding algorithms are a pretty well-solved problem. Just Google and find an existing solution.

It's already using A star, it's just limited range, probably because the game was developed for old PCs and many units doing infinite range A star all at once would slow it down to a halt

this excellent blog post by factorio devs shows how one can solve it.

In their case the limiting factor was the vast area that needed to be covered.
But I can imagine this also works where the limiting factor is processing power.
