It's choosing a closed surface to sum up all the m lines that go in or out. However, don't be fooled. M flux is different from E flux. Notice M lines don't have a beginning nor an end, unlike electric field lines which do (source, sink). Magents have 2 poles. M lines form loops. Perhaps monopoles don't exist? Anyway, therefore, the M flux is ZERO through CLOSED surfaces. An open surface can result in a non zero net flux. Meanwhile, net E flux is proportional to the total charge ENCLOSED by a closed surface. (Now you know why that's possible with E field vectors).

Knowing this scalar quantity is helpful in determining or troubleshooting voltage changes in conductors (ie electromagnets)

Whatever it is, does it contribute to the dark matter mass? It can move charged particles and other magnets so it does have energy and e=mc2 but cannot be seen like em can..

Magnetic forces have no correlation to mass, so I wouldn't think so. Magnetic forces act on charges and velocities, but on galactic scales, they just aren't a big deal for the same reason that we don't worry about the sun's magnetic field unless we're talking about single ions.

But take my words with a grain of salt, I didn't pay attention in physics 2 and definitely didn't pay attention in physics C

Warning mad jumble talk below.

Electrons flowing through a wire or any other component can be described as a flow of negatively chared particles but it can also be described as a flow of positive particles moving in the opposite direction.
The positive charge is the lack of a negative charge, an electron hole.
The hole is a quasi-particle that is not actually 'real' but it's properties and behavior can be described just like any other particle.

So I propose the notion that all of the fundamental particles we are familiar with, and are composed of, are in fact the quasi particles of a much larger and complex system of physics. Turtles all the way down.

Magnetic flux is a flow of continuity through a different layer of reality and is expressed in ours as the invisible force we are all familiar with.
