OP, we're gonna need to know a little more info about what you are trying to do...

What populates you array? Are you trying to find the partial derivative of a particular function and store them in an array? Are you doing this symbolically?

How the fuck do you plan to do that with an array? How is the data coming to you? Sounds like you need a tree and to parse out whatever data you get and have labels for what part each of the data is in the equation. Unless your hardcoding the arrays to match your algorithm which it sounds like you don't have.
