Why the disparity with northern and southern Italian IQ?

How the fuck can there by that much of a difference between two parts of the same country.

From what I have read the average Italian IQ is about 101 which is one of the highest in Europe, but what's even more impressive is that the average Southern Italian IQ is about 94 while the average northern Italian IQ is about 105. If just Northern Italy was it's own country it would be the smartest country in Europe and the 4th smartest in the world.

How the fuck are northern Italians so smart?

My theory is that the northern Italians didn't the suffer the same dysgenic effects of the success of Rome. After Rome became such a major city with welfare programs and higher standard of living there was less selection pressure on IQ. I'm sure if there's genetic tests done the Northern Italians have more in common with the ancient Romans than the current population that lives in Rome

the dropout rates increase considerably the more south you go. And we're not talking about high-school dropout rates, but even elementary school ones.

Moreover, if you look at the 20+ population, you can see that best students emigrate north to attend university. It is reasonable to assume that best students have the highest IQ.

Doesn't IQ seem to correlate with how hard it is to live somewhere? So in hot climates you have a bunch of insects and non intelligent life flourishes, then you go to colder places or places more prone to catastrophes and you find more intelligence.

Since scandinavia doesnt have as large social differences between different parts of our countries IQ is probably more even throghout the countries. Northern Italy also gets all the smartest people from south italy who migrate there as well further widens the gap. Wouldn’t surprise me if we can see this on an EU level soon as well given how easy it is to migrate today creating a huge braindrain for eastern europe.

Just because a people had a culture of raiding and pillaging doesn't necessarily mean they're all-around more smart. Just means they had a mix of cultural, moral, and financial incentives and leanings that led them to hone this particular strategy

Viking raids were largely effective due to brazenness, risk-taking, physical strength/skill/training, and arguably ruthlessness, greed, and lack of morals. They didn't require geniuses. Also, they eventually became ineffective due to counter-tactics devised by smarter defenders

Can someone explain some5ing to § mitwit?
I thought iqs were normalized to 100 being the average, so shouldn’t the average be 100 for any population? What population set are they using for the base normalization to 100?

Some of the richest countries/states/republics in the world(or at least Europe) for the past thousand years or so have all been located in the northern Italy. Venice, Genoa, Milano, Florence. IQ is cumulative and welfare helps states invest more in people then it grows and also welfar grows which helpd them again invest more in people and so on and so forth *sniff*

Terrone boomer here. From my anecdotal experience the smart people in my generation are not reproducing. I went to a good school and the last time I checked most of my classmates have failed to reproduce. A good number of the women isn't even in a stable relationship. It's not even a brain drain, it's more like a brain sink.

Smart southeners go to north for unis with better reputation
Smart italians leave Italy for higher pays
Italy’s emphasis on “cultura generale” is a big factor imo, also Italian lyceums are definitely harder than most european high schools (lots of homework, oral exams, “general culture” as a subject at the finals/maturity exams, emphasis on oral dialectics, maths up to calculus 1 etc)
Not sure about other types of high schools other than lyceums tho

t. ex liceo scientifico student currently studying biomolecular sciences in Trento with lots of coursemates from southern Italy

Until very recently, for example, schools in the north were several times better at teaching than in the south, dunno now. It was a humongous difference too. This applies to several public services
