I'm taking solid state physics right now and I hate these vibrational fuckers because the professor doesn't explain anything about them and just rederives random equations during the lecture period.

Yes, they are vibrational modes defined on a lattice coupled by a coupling potential. They are mathematically (almost) equivalent to photon excitations in the electromagnetic field

Also, download "The Oxford Solid State Basics" by Steven H. Simon. Great book with intuitive explanations.
