I went to my state school, had a scholarship that paid me surplus every semester, and then got paid more doing undergrad research with one of the world's experts in my field. I'm currently pursuing a PhD at a different university.
Maybe if you get into a Harvard or MIT tier school, sure it's worth it. (Those places usually have very generous financial aid anyway.) But otherwise, basically 98% of all private universities are a fucking scam and I have no sympathy for my fellow burgers who cry about "muh student loans". And if you're interested in research, you actually have LESS options to work with famous profs compared to just going to a flagship state school.
