Brazil is cut off from the top of SA by a huge rainforest. And communication and travelling of (goods, people, diseases) through Africa vertically was always slow. SA people don't just randomly wander/vacate to the Congo.
I think the english variant is rather just in name, as in that's the place where they first discovered but, it might have 'happened' sooner in a different european country.
