what textbooks/monographs is /sci/ currently reading?
i've got a representation theory course coming up, so i'm reading picrel atm. unitary representations confuse me a bit

Why read an entire book on representations of monoids or Galois theory? Unless you are specializing in that of course, but it just doesn't seem very interesting. A waste of time when a couple chapters of an algebra book will suffice imo. Anyways pic related is me even though I don't plan to specialize so maybe I'm a bit hypocritical.

firstly it should be "finite groups", not monoids, must've grabbed the wrong image
secondly, i'm not planning on reading either to completion, just bits that i need
lastly, if things go well, i would like to specialise in something algebraic, so both these subjects will probably come up again in the future

Not the most rigorous text on the subject, but a comfy read nonetheless. The lack of "pop-ups" are a plus as well.

Great book. Better exposition than the $200+ calc books used in most calc classes nowadays. If you're looking for a followup book to read, Kline dovetails nicely with Strang's "Introduction to Applied mathematics" which I also can't highly enough.

yes i read it and did all of the problems in my senior year of high school. It's just a really fun good book. The analytic/combinatorial number theory bits are quite nice as well.

I'm the AYRT. I haven't read Strang's linear algebra book, but I skimmed over some of the parts available here: https://math.mit.edu/~gs/linearalgebra/ and it looks pretty good, with worked examples, lots of exercises, and solutions available. I think that Strang put a lot of thought into coming up with good examples in his applied mathematics book, and I expect the same is probably true of his other books as well.

Several years ago I read Axler's book "Linear algebra done right." At the time I thought it was an excellent introduction to some of the big-picture theory, but in retrospect didn't contain enough computational stuff for me to really "get used" to the subject and its notation, so I wouldn't rely on it as one's only textbook.

Other things I liked are:

Morris kline is a lot like wildberger. He can teach pretty well but philosophically he's a hack and a hypocrite willing to misrepresent history and modern developments to suit his own viewpoint. His "loss of certainty" is one of the most garbage books I have ever had the displeasure of reading

OP here, i've also been using this to learn the structure theorem for modules over PIDs, but i've been getting kind of filtered by it. i'm fine up to and including the invariant factors version (or w/e it's called, the one where you decompose based on order ideal containment), but i get filtered by primary components and primary decomposition. i get the idea, just take every ideal you get from the 1st decomp, split it off into prime powers by the chinese remainder theorem, then collect the prime powers for the same prime p into a single p-component, the division condition on the orders of ideals makes it so that there are no "surprises" and it should work, but i kind of get filtered by the uniqueness proof and the subsequent discussion of canonical forms for matrices
