Why do 4chan users that have never tried this insist it destroys your brain cells or turns you into a p-zombie? SSRIs are one of the most heavily studied drugs of modern medicine so why do so many people continue to distrust them? Is it just that people will never trust something that alters the brain?

Most of the people studying this shit are completely incompetent. If you must "trust" someone, you should not trust them. It is primitive science compared to a field like physics.

Tried various SSRI, they were all shit.

One dose of MDMA did more for me in one evening than half a year of SSRI + 1000euro therapy. Drugs saved my life, but it was nothing that I can prescribe.

don't be fooled by /sci/'s quantitative edge compared to the other boards. this place is full of just as many ignorant loudmouths as any other. being anonymous and feeling no impunity about dropping controversial opinions is always going to foster an environment where people speak confidently about things they actually know little about.

SSRIs are just low hanging fruit because they frequently prescribed and have lots of uncomfortable side effects. this is well known, and it even causes normies to broadly distrust them. they're still by and large the best long-term treatment for someone experiencing true depression symptoms. the only real complaint you can make is that depression is overdiagnosed and these things are sometimes prescribed to people who don't need them, but that's just part of the process of psychiatric treatment. you can't do blood tests for this kind of shit.

And the studies have collectively found the efficacy of SSRI's to be fairly low. Also the mechanism of these drugs have still not been fully explored or understood. They also have the potential for long term side effects even after you stop taking them.

So shut the fuck up with muh "trust the science". The drugs are shit and naturally skepticism and wariness result from that.

If the "best long-term treatment" shows very tepid efficacy then there is a case to be made that taking nothing at all is better than the risk of side effect unless you're suicidal. The risk of a patient killing themselves is what allows psychs to feel vindicated by prescribing drugs that literally risk making you a limp dick cuckold and throwing anything at the patient until something sticks. But they're still bad at treating depression.

Ironically SSRI's double the risk of suicide. The industry denies and hides this but the proper science shows this.

You've got a point, but my point is that major depression is a hard nut to crack and SSRIs are still the best bet for some people. In the eyes of a prescribing doctor, a little bit of limp dick is better than taking a self-imposed dirtnap, which is much, much more common outcome for untreated depression than many people appreciate. They're obviously not a silver bullet, but you'd be hard pressed to find a psych med that is. Benzos for anxiety is a substantially nastier business in my opinion

In my view this is the problem with doctirs and also why so many eagerly support transitioning and all the associated negative health consequences of hormone therapy and surgery - underdeveloped medical ethics that inform them that no price is too high to pay to save a life even when an intervention makes life worth living less.
