Completely cover a nation with an extremely fast-growing plant of laboratory design, to collect CO2 and counter global warming.
I'm trying to convince myself this isn't suggested simply because you'd have to sacrifice a country's people and natural biodiversity.

That is an overly complicated solution. Much easier to put iron in the oceans and get vast amounts of algae to fix the CO2 and turn it into useful feed, fuel and raw materials.
Funny thing is, the warmers scream the world in boiling and also forbid all forms of geoengineering. Meanwhile, the massive drop in traffic in general and air traffic in particular has had exactly zero visible impact on the global CO2 levels.
