Start with a number of plausible hypotheses.
Look for data that would rule out some of the hypotheses
Repeat until you rule out all but one possible explanation, or otherwise narrow it down enough to make something work.
That isn't inductive reasoning. Inductive reasoning is "this happened six times in a row, so it must always happen that way".
