My hypothesis is that the body must be cleaned often or you literally rot like pic related, some homeless or mental ill never wash and their foot (or other parts) start to rot with worms and such.
Maybe putting bacterias eating dead flesh on a body with many dead tissue (placenta, and such) fucked up the elemination process, maybe the methods were different between those who washed hands and those who didn't, we can't be so sure that's an old study.
