Also, until the 1920s, springs were super important for building clocks. I guess it has become something of a traditional thing to introduce harmonic motion by talking about springs.

I used to think that all light cars had jittery rides just because "sporty" expectations are engineered into them, but there's no way to get a soft level ride using a passive suspension system without making the vehicle/occupant and the vehicle/wheel assembly weight ratios both a bit ridiculously high, no matter how the strength of the spring & resistance of the dampener are adjusted to the vehicle's weight. So to get a "flying-couch" ride you're pretty much stuck with hauling around at least 2 tons of car until active systems get a whole lot better than they are now. In other respects how suspensions in general are optimized for different use cases & design limits is really more interesting than the case with drive-trains--which are usually weaker than ideal for boring regulatory & legal reasons, as opposed to those that stem from engineering compromises.

Nigga they keep using springs because everything that displaces by a load has stiffness. So basically they use springs early on in mechanics so you can visualise it. When you get more advance and if you do modules like FEM (Statics and Dynamics), the most important component is always the stiffness matrix. This stiffness matrix can represent the stiffness of a beam, 2D shape, 3D shape. To find the Displacements you basically do the same thing you learn here. [K]*{U}={F} ==> {U}=[K]^-1*{F}. The only difference is that there are load and displacement vectors, instead of a singular value for each.
