Reading textbooks vs Creative Discovery

Reading textbooks does not lend itself to discovery and it seems to hinder creative thought more so than giving the reader a good intuition of the concepts presented. Should a person desiring to know math, or any science, avoid textbooks and discover the fundamental concepts on his own? After all, you are trying to simultaneously decipher someone else's mind and abstract ideas, which cannot be a good combination for true learning.
