What is the function of the skin growth that the range of HPV viruses cause?

I can't think of any other virus that makes abnormal growths pop up on the body. Yes HIV causes lesions, but that's a symptom of the body fighting against the virus and not the site of infection.

Also could we somehow make HPV beneficial by altering it's genetic material.

Remember tree man and the uncontrolled bark like growths that he had all over his body? If we could alter the viruses genetic material, could we use the virus to say fix certain organs like the heart for example, by causing the generation of tissues specific growth?

So, two questions, what is the function of the growth that HPV causes on the skin and could the virus be altered so it could be used for beneficial purposes?
