The long term carbon cycle is controlled by large scale tectonic and continental changes, exposed landmass and erosion of carbonates, flood basalt eruptions and the planets orbital cycles. on the timescales we care about, CO2 is the biggest driver of temperature.
As for the levels of CO2, the live at that age developed and evolved to live in that climate with a completely different continental configuration. Suddenly cranking up the CO2 and the heat on our current planet will not magically bring back the carboniferous.
