That's practical light-interference, which particular case of described could be designated I guess alike of sheen's glean-interference / ????-???ep?epe???? ?o?e?a?oc??. That's trivialty however, I don't claim authorship due to not in the least there being nothing essentially to claim it on.
As regarding the observation itself (trickery being oxide film's tranparency) - never mind.

That's probably just how it's taught.. A lot of it honestly is kind of arbitrary in practice. Like I can use the law of cosines even though I completely forget the proof for it

no I don't think so, aim for the average math knowledge of a mediocre engineer. And that will take some years starting with no math intuition.
